Cake Shoe Diaries Welcomes Caralee Robertshaw

The Sugar cove is delighted to welcome Caralee Robertshaw from Cambridge, Ontario. Her passion for cake took off while browsing through a book of cake designs, while preparing for her sister’s wedding. People, I tell you it can happen anywhere! So let’s strap on our cake shoes, as Caralee shares with us what inspired her passion for all things sugar.

I have always enjoyed baking but it wasn’t until I went with my sister to a cake tasting for her wedding that I fell in love with cake decorating. I remember looking through the cake artist’s book of designs totally amazed at what she could create. I came home from the appointment ready to learn all about this new craft I had instantly fell in love with.

That year I received two books, for my birthday, from my parents that I have read cover to cover many times: The Essential Guide to Cake Decorating by Jane Price and Cake Decorating for the First Time by Jaynie Maxfield. It was through both of these books that I began to learn piping skills, tools of the trade and sugar modeling. After learning on my own for a while, a friend suggested I take the Wilton Cake Decorating courses. I had a very skilled instructor and learned a lot from her. Since then, my main resources have been online tutorials and websites. I truly believe that when it comes to cake decorating it is all about how much you practice. Any skill is obtainable if you are willing to put in the time and effort to perfect the product.

My main motivation for cakes is my family. I am always thrilled when an occasion comes along where I can make a cake for them. It is also nice to be able to attempt a new skill on a cake when you know the audience will appreciate your effort and understand if it flops! My little girl, Eden, has quickly become my favourite inspiration. She will turn two this October and I am already planning her birthday cake. She gets so excited when she sees mommy making another cake and is already asking to be on a chair beside me as I work. I am looking forward to many years of over the top cakes for her!

It has been almost six years of learning since that cake tasting that started it all and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I currently work out of my home making cakes for friends and family and I teach cake decorating courses at the David Durward Centre in Cambridge. I still have so much more to learn and I like that! There are so many talented artists to be inspired by and always a new technique to master.
