Just finished a 3 day class with Rick Reichart from cakelava...and all I have to say is BEST CLASS EVER! The class was titled "Discover your Inner Artist", and it was exactly that, as it's really your creativity that makes your cake, "your cake". I had never sculpted cake before, nor had extensive airbrushing experience, so the learning curve was big but it was awesome!
Rick imparted many techniques during the three days of class, including airbrush and painting techniques, cake sculpting, fr
eehand art techniques without the use of molds or cutters, as well as instructions on creating various underwater details with a minimal use of tools. We created a lovely three tier hibiscus cake and a 3D sculpted clownfish with an underwater scene.
This was Rick's teaching debut, and it was stellar. Rick was sincere in sharing his knowledge and very giving with the techniques shown in class, as well as taking the time to answer each student's question....and there were a few! The pace of the class was great and as an instructor Rick is very helpful and supportive of his students. I really appreciated how he circulated the class, checking with each student to make sure that they were on the right track.
So Rick....A+ for you. Coming all the way from Kailua, Oahu in Hawaii, I look forward to your return next year. For those who haven't taken a c
lass from Rick, not only is he a talented cake designer, he is also a great teacher. His class is jam packed with skills and techniques that make his class a worth while investment.

I had first started communicating with them for the "Cake Shoe Diaries" series, my monthly interview blog serial. I interviewed Rick for the November 2010 issue and they were both fabulous to work with. Meeting them in person, did not disappoint as they're both great and down to earth people.
Thank you Chrissie Boon, owner of Too Nice to Slice and Icing Insp
irations, for hosting Rick Reichart and his lovely wife Sasha. You and your husband, Justin took great care of us, and the catered lunches from the Little Mushroom were fabulous. I look forward to Rick's next class.
